A short note on thanks
Gratitude week, minus the centerpiece. A few honest thank-yous — to the hard clients, the blunt notes, and the work that refused to cooperate.
This is the week the whole industry publishes its gratitude post, so we’ll keep ours short and slightly out of tune.
We’re thankful for the hard clients. Not the difficult ones. The hard ones. The people who read the brief closely enough to argue with it, who asked why three times in a row, who wouldn’t approve work they didn’t fully understand. Every project this year that ended somewhere better than it started had one of them in the room. At the time, we didn’t always enjoy it. That’s roughly how you know it was working.
For the honest feedback, too. “I don’t get it” is a more useful note than “love it,” and this year we received plenty of both, and only one of them ever made anything better. The notes that stung a little were, almost without exception, correct. Somewhere inside the sting is the information.
And for the work that pushed back. The layouts that wouldn’t resolve, the names that took thirty bad versions to find, the build that failed in review for reasons that turned out to matter. Easy work fills a calendar. Resistant work teaches you something, provided you stay in the room with it long enough to hear what it’s saying.
Here’s the part we actually want to say.
Thanks works better as a practice than a performance.
The holiday version is annual, general, and addressed to no one in particular. Its professional cousin is specific, immediate, and aimed at a person: the developer who caught the thing before it shipped, the client who gave you the note nobody else would, the producer who quietly moved a meeting so the work could finish properly. Said out loud, at the moment it happened, in front of other people when possible.
That version costs nothing and compounds. People do more of what gets noticed, and a team where good catches get named out loud starts producing more good catches, which is either culture or gratitude with a feedback loop, depending on how sentimental you’re feeling this week.
The colony metaphor gets one line here, because it’s earned it: owls don’t thank each other, as far as we know, but they do keep showing up to the same barn, and maybe that’s the same thing.
So: thank you. To the clients who argued, the colleagues who caught things, and the work that fought back.
